Masjid Bilal of Cleveland. Raised from the ground up, largely by its own members, at East 75th and Euclid in 1983.

Friday Jumuah Visit

Built by the community

In 1980, Imam W. Deen Mohammed said it was time to plan new places of worship.

Most mosques then were converted churches and storefronts. Imam Clyde Rahman came home to Cleveland determined to put a plan around those words.

Members did 60% of the construction work themselves.

The community gave whatever it had: funds, expertise, and labor.

It opened on June 3, 1983. Debt‑free.

Imam W. Deen Mohammed led the first Jumah prayer service in the new masjid.

The first mosque built from the ground up in Greater Cleveland.

And the first mosque built by a predominantly African American congregation in the United States.

Our history goes back to the early 1950s.

First as Temple No. 18, under the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Then as Masjid Willie Mohammed, under Imam Mohammed. Since 1983, Masjid Bilal.

Today

Masjid Bilal is led by Imam Shafeeq Sabir. In 2009 the community formed the Clyde Rahman Community Center, named for the imam who directed the building project.

Quranic Arabic

With Brother Hasan Abdul Alim. The basics of Qur'anic Arabic and ayats from the Holy Qur'an.

Ages 4 to 16

Youth class

Qur'anic ayats, prayer, the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the history of African American Muslims. A parent or guardian stays at the masjid during class.

The Imam's office announces each week's topic.

1 to 5 pm, lower level
